    D-Module description:
    Based on Duolabs technology D-Module is a fully programmable PCMCIA module dedicated to DVB compliant STB-CI applications known as CAM (Conditional Access Module). D-Module is designed to give maximum flexibility and power for developers all combined with high security features to enhance the possibility to host a secure CAS.
    The first Open Source Conditional Access Module. Why?
    In an era where all manufactures are closing their technology Duolabs belives in an open source project which can offer a low cost implementation for small Broadcasters who cannot affort big R&D costs.
    The today's Conditional Access colution companies are asking high entry costs to get access to their technology subscribing long term agreements with warranty on their system's security.
    This is the reason why we belive an open source project may help individuals and small companies to experiment on the field their solutions supported by a senior members crew who may help to speed up the development.
    Some parts of the CAM are not open source and supplied only in binary format to void third parties copyright violation.
    Why D-Module?
    D-Module is uniquely designed, as product that differs from others in that it allows you the fully customize your design thanks to the flexible structure of the internal FPGA. All the known CAM modules in the market are based on an ASIC design in order to reduce the costs of each single device but sensibly reducing the customizable features and disclosing sensitive information about the eventual CAS and its structure and disclosing security information.

    Fully re programmable and customizable.
    D-Module allows the developer to have the full control on the DVB data flow to solve present and future needs that the normal DVB chip does not support.
    All the algorithms included in the DVB chip (ex. encryption algorithm, tables, keys) can be replaced at any time with a simple update.
    Any ASIC design cannot be as flexible as the FGPA solution as the fully chip configuration can be changed at anytime under developer's specification.
    Very fast algorithm calculations.
    The FPGA technology enhances big opportunities to software and hardware developers to create fast hardware execution procedures that cannot be otherwise implemented via software. For example it is possible to encrypt/decrypt the TS packets in real time with a private algorithm instead before passing the TS to the CSA. This makes almost impossible for attackers to emulate a hardware algorithm as fast as the FPGA without using an FPGA.
    Anti Card-sharing CAS.
    Anti Card-sharing is possible whether a CAS system is implemented as the Control Word is never ever in transit between CAM and Smart card. Extra Anti Card-sharing countermeasures can be taken for existing CAS. No Control Word is ever disclosed along the decryption process but inside the FPGA only. This makes the Control Word sharing almost impossible.
    OTA update.
    Real time OTA update allows the developer/CAS Provider to update real time group of CAM's real time with special update.
    Costs
    The flexible platform using the FPGA solution has a complexity cost.
    ASIC solution can be much more cost aggressive but puts big limits on the CAM features.

    CAS.:
    D-Module is based on an FPGA which is hard to reverse engineering.
    Almost all the CAS are based on a Smartcard solution which is normally not secure is not lasting for more than two years in the market before getting hacked.
    D-Module offers the great flexybility of implementing a CAS system directly into the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) which makes the attacker's life much harder the time investment is completely against the piracy profit.
    D-Module is ideal for new generation LCD, Plasma or LED Television sets that are hosting a DVB-T receiver with the Common Interface slot.
    D-Module is extremely flexible and working on almost the 98% of HDTV sets in the market now.
    D-Module offers to CAS provider the following features:
    •OTA Algorithm Exchange. It would be possible to exchange real time the encryption algorithm. This exchange can be done for the entire algorithm that calculates the Control Word.
    •Anti Card-sharing soluton. Card-sharing is a painful problem in content protection. The Card-sharing is based on the real time exchange of the Control Word through internet or via satellite. This problem cannot be stopped as long as the communication between Smartcard and STB is existing. Some providers are implementing some special smartcard protocols but offuscate the Control Word but it is not enought!
    D-Module is not exchanging the Control Word to the outside world. This prevents any Card-Sharing solution.
    •Customized PKI algorithm. The use of asymmetric key algorithms instead of or in addition to symmetric key algorithms protects communications or authenticating messages. The hardware implementation of these techniques of public key-private key cryptography makes the D-Module extremely flexible and secure. Public secure authetication algorithm can be implemented in VHDL.
    •Unique serial numbers. Some unique serial numbers and an OTP (one Time programmable area) are available for customized application. Unique serial numbers can be used for a unique identification of the scubscriber.
    •P.O.S. (Point Of ****) activation and recharging. In case of a pre-paid CAS network it will be possible to real time activate, customize, recharge the viewer subscriptions. A on-filed POS can be positioned in stores, caffee and other public areas and can provide a series of customized services to the end user.
    •Multiple Provider platform. D-Module can be used as a multi provider platform. Any provider can be implemented real time without compromising the security of others. An OTA upgrade can implement new provider to the subscriber in case of a network held by the same CAS manteiner.
    D-Module extends the idea of Conditional Access System.
    D-Module is also available with a Wi-Fi connection (802.11g) that enables the user to get connected to a broadband internet connection through a standard router.
    D-Module Wi-Fi offer a wide and unimmaginable offer of services like real time On-Screen-Display (OSD) messages that can be sent via internet from the CAS base station to each single subscriber, a resctricted range of subscribers or all subscribers in the matter of seconds.
    D-Module Wi-Fi can also play IP Streamings giving the opportuting of making a real IPTV streaming solution. The bandwith limit is 54MBit/s as a normal laptop.
